Pretenders
The pretenders were next level tech in the transformers universe. instead of turning into a vehicle or a animal (which was pretty mechanical looking. Pretender Shell's aloud a transformer to hide their nature as robots in an external armored shell which allows the robot to take the appearance of the native lifeform.
Atop of its main use for exploration and infiltration, it can add as a protective suit and aid in self repair and even act independently from but still mentally controlled by the robot as a secondary soldier. The downside of this is that if the shell is hurt the robot can fell it , even much more if it was a normal robot itself. Usually its a humanoid shell ( a human in battle armor for autobots and a monster for the decepticons).

But it was revolutionary in the fiction.
their are many types of pretender types which are:
Classic Pretenders who are transformers who have got pretender shells but have been around for a long time.
Double Pretenders which two bots hide in one pretender shell and the robot can combine into on robot outside the shell.
Pretender beasts who are normal pretenders except their alt-mode and shell are based off animals.
pretender vehicles who instead of pretending to be organic creatures, They hide in assault vehicles shells.
Mega pretenders who hide in transformable organic shell which can turn into a vehicle.
Ultra pretenders who hide in transformable organic shell which can turn into a vehicle which the shell itself can hide in a separate vehicle shell all of these shells can act as a small army controlled by the robot.
There even combiner teams who are pretenders which are Pretender Monster's and Dinoforce both decepticon combiner teams though Kakuryu dose become an autobot in some fiction.
In revenge of the fallen theirs a human sized pretender called Alice whos alt-mode is an organic human, similar to the animated Sari Sumdac (though Sumdac is a Technorganic not a pretender).
The technology help to make better beast mode technology which weren't actual shells but made the beast mode externally organic but still an normal metal transformer who's kibble is pseudo-organic.
